A leading energy services provider required a rugged edge AI platform capable of processing camera feeds, machinery data, and wireless communication locally. Axiomtek’s AIE510-ONX, powered by NVIDIA® Jetson Orin™ NX, was selected to enable real-time video analytics, object detection, safety monitoring, remote monitoring, and equipment data processing directly at the edge.

By bringing AI intelligence closer to the machinery, the solution enhances operational visibility, enables faster response to field risks, reduces dependency on cloud connectivity, and supports safer, more efficient excavator and crane operations.

Challenges

Oil field machinery operations involve high safety demands and limited tolerance for delayed information. Excavators and cranes perform lifting, excavation, positioning, and movement tasks in environments where blind spots, moving vehicles, heavy loads, dust, vibration, and unpredictable site conditions can increase operational risk.

The customer needed a computing platform that could collect video from surrounding cameras, integrate excavator and crane sensor data, process AI workloads locally, and transmit key information to a centralized control center. The system also had to operate reliably in harsh field conditions while supporting industrial communication protocols such as CAN bus, Modbus, and Ethernet.

Cloud-dependent architectures were not ideal for this application because remote oil field sites may experience unstable or limited network availability. The customer required intelligence close to the machine, where video and sensor data could be analysed immediately to support faster response and safer operation.

Application: Real-Time AI for Safer Oil Field Machinery

In the oil field deployment, the AIE510-ONX serves as the central edge AI platform installed on the excavator or crane. It collects live video from surrounding cameras and integrates machinery data from onboard sensors through CAN bus, Modbus, and Ethernet, including engine status, hydraulic pressure, load information, GPS location, and other critical operating signals. Powered by NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX, the system processes video and sensor data locally to support real-time visibility, object detection, vehicle classification, safety monitoring, congestion awareness, and predictive maintenance.

By performing AI inference directly at the edge, the solution helps operators identify risks faster and maintain better situational awareness around blind spots and active work zones. Key alerts and operation data can be transmitted to the control center through 5G and Wi-Fi 6E, enabling remote monitoring while reducing dependency on continuous cloud connectivity.
