Intelligent Microgrid Management with IoT Gateways

Energy generation and delivery are evolving rapidly, especially with the rise of microgrids. A microgrid is a local energy network that serves neighborhoods, facilities, or entire communities. It can operate independently from the main grid using local energy sources, including solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewables. By generating power close to where it’s consumed, microgrids reduce reliance on long-distance transmission, provide electricity to rural or isolated areas, and promote clean energy adoption with a smaller carbon footprint.

Microgrids are both autonomous and intelligent. They can continue operating during main grid outages, enhancing resilience against blackouts caused by extreme weather, such as the 2021 Texas winter storms. Integrated controllers and IIoT gateways monitor energy flow, grid health, and supply-demand balance in real time. This enables efficient energy management, better demand forecasting, and rapid response to peak loads, supporting a sustainable, reliable, and self-sufficient local energy network.

Challenges

Our customer, a leading renewable energy solutions provider, specializes in solar PV integration, smart grids, and EV charging systems. To maximize energy independence, they needed to develop an energy control system capable of monitoring the microgrid 24/7, including solar panels, battery loads, and other assets. This system required a ruggedized, ultra-reliable IIoT gateway capable of operating across extended temperature ranges and maintaining stable 4G/LTE connectivity for remote management.

Solution

ICO300-83B Axiomtek proposed the ICO300-83B, a fanless DIN-rail embedded system powered by the low-power Intel® Celeron® N3350 processor. The system features two GbE LAN ports, four RS-232/422/485 ports, and a DDR3L SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 8GB memory. It includes two full-size PCIe Mini Card slots for mSATA storage and wireless communication modules (3G/4G/LTE/Wi-Fi), ensuring flexible connectivity and high adaptability for IIoT microgrid applications. Designed for harsh environments, it supports -40°C to +70°C operation, 12–24 VDC wide-range power input with overvoltage/reverse protection, and up to 2G vibration endurance. Key internal components were customized to extend service life according to customer requirements.

Application: Powering Smart Microgrids with Intelligent Edge Connectivity

The customer has adopted Axiomtek’s ICO300-83B in its microgrid system, leveraging its intelligent grid capabilities to monitor and manage solar energy assets—including PV panels, inverters, and batteries —as well as energy-consuming applications such as HVAC systems, lighting, and industrial machinery. This ensures all devices within the grid remain connected and operate efficiently, optimizing energy use, improving sustainability, and supporting reliable power delivery for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

As an intelligent communication gateway, the ICO300-83B provides rich I/Os and wireless connectivity to enable seamless data transfer between local devices and remote management servers. Combined with edge computing and remote monitoring software, it processes data from sensors and meters—voltage, current, sunlight intensity, and power consumption—to regulate electricity generation, distribution, and consumption across the microgrid. This enables faster emergency responses, supports predictive maintenance, enables demand-side management, and facilitates integration with energy storage, EV charging stations, and other smart grid applications to achieve a fully optimized energy network.
